A homeowner from the up and coming neighborhood of Soho, New York, noticed her bathroom's vanity had become dull and stained. Her once beautiful travertine vanity top now looked lifeless. She had tried many store-bought products that promised to bring back the luster to stone surfaces, but all efforts had been unsuccessful. After the nth attempt, she decided to give up and call a Soho stone polishing professional to see if there was anything that could be done to bring back the stone's original appearance. At first, she had no idea who to call, but after talking to some of her friends and checking out Sir Grout Manhattan's website, she decided to contact us to request a free evaluation and quote.

Before and After of a Stone Polishing Service in Soho, New York
When the stone-polishing specialist saw the vanity top, he explained to the homeowner that the reason it had gotten to that state was mainly because she had been using the wrong cleaning products, the store-bought cleaning products she had been using. These kinds of products are usually not pH-neutral—they tend to be of either acidic or alkaline nature, which can etch the stone's surface or damage the stone's sealant, making it more vulnerable to stains. The damage is not typically seen right away, but with time, travertine becomes etched and dull, and in need of a professional honing and polishing to restore its natural beauty. This was the case of the vanity top in question. Luckily, we were confident that we could help her fix the problem and bring the luster of this travertine vanity top back. We offered the homeowner an estimate, which she agreed to, and set the date to do the job.

On the set date, we started by masking and protecting the adjacent areas so they wouldn't be affected by our work, then we continued to hone the surface to remove all stains and etch marks. The honing process uses abrasives and water to get a uniform appearance and return the stone's natural gloss. After that, we proceeded to polish the surface using polishing powders combined with a buffer to maximize shine. Once the honing and polishing were done, we sealed the stone to protect it from any future damage. Sealing stone surfaces protects them from etching and staining while making them easier to clean and helps maintain their lustrous look.

The client was pleased and a little surprised with the result: a vanity top free of etch marks and stains and looking as good as when it was first installed. We explained that in order to maintain her vanity top, she needed to use a cleaner designed for natural stone. Additionally, we told her she should never put toiletries directly on the vanity top. Most of these products can stain or etch the surface and damage the sealant over time, so they should be placed on a tray.
