Porcelain tile is one of the most versatile products in home design. Its beauty and durability make it the perfect tile for floors, walls, backsplashes, countertops, even patios and pools. Sourced from all over the world, porcelain has come to be a decorative, reliable option for a variety of household and commercial uses, which is why this homeowner chose porcelain tile for her kitchen flooring several years ago. Unfortunately, as the time went on, this beautiful porcelain aged and stained after years of dampness penetrating the surface and improper cleaning products, so the woman decided to start looking for DIY tutorials. She tried different cleaning products and techniques, but nothing worked.

Before and After Picture of a Porcelain Kitchen Tile Cleaning Service in Manhattan, New York
Desperate and worried, the woman decided to look for a reliable company that would give her the solution she was looking for. She sat at her computer and typed into the browser: Manhattan Tile Cleaning. Among the top results was Sir Grout Manhattan as a leading company in the hard surface restoration industry, with a long career and a lot of positive testimonials that supported their services. She believed we were the perfect option and decided to give us a call to request a free in-home quote.

A few days after, our team of specialists arrived at the house to start the assessment of the kitchen. We inspected the delicate porcelain tile floor that the homeowner wanted us to fix; however, it was severely stained and dirty. To solve the problem, we proposed two steps: first to deeply clean the tile, and then proceed to seal the color. This plan would bring back the beauty of this porcelain. We explained to the woman that our cleaning and sealing services are a cost-effective solution that will get rid of all the dirt that regular cleaning cannot, protect the tiles and grout, and facilitate cleaning. She agreed and approved the plan of action. So, we set a date to carry out the work.

On the date of the job, our techs started to deep clean the tile and grout by applying a non-toxic cleaner and using a high-speed scrubber, which is gentle on the floor and effective in removing dirt. Through this process, we were able to remove all the dirt that had accumulated on the tiles and grout. Since there weren't any cracks or holes in the grout, no repairs were necessary. Therefore, we proceeded to apply ColorSeal to the grout lines, giving them a fresh uniform color. Our proprietary ColorSeal process recolors grout and leaves it looking like new again. In addition, ColorSeal makes grout stain, water, mold and mildew resistant. After all the grout lines were recolored, we applied Tile Armor, which is another of our proprietary products. Tile Armor seals and protects tile and grout from stains and spills. Both ColorSeal and Tile Armor are non-toxic and safe for the entire family, including pets.

When our team finished the job, the woman was just speechless. She said that her kitchen flooring looked brand new again. She was very thankful as well as pleased with the result and mentioned that she would recommend our services to family and friends. In order to maintain the tile and grout looking great, our specialists made some recommendations:

  • Always apply a pH-neutral, soap-less floor cleaner, such as Sir Grout's Natural Hard Surface Cleaner, liberally to your tile and grout, let it soak for 5 minutes, then mop as usual.
  • Use undiluted cleaners on the areas where dirt has accumulated the most. It is very important to dry surfaces with a squeegee to remove dirty water and cleaner residue that can settle in the concave grout lines. Otherwise, once the liquids evaporate, dirt will be left behind.
  • Avoid the use of acid- or ammonia-based cleaners because they could affect the color of the grout and/or etch and dull the tiles. So, do not use a vinegar and water mixture because vinegar is acidic.
  • Finally, we advised against the use of steel wool or other abrasives on tile, as they can scratch and dull the surface.
What is the difference between ceramic tiles and porcelain tiles?
Porcelain and ceramic tile are both part of the larger category of tiles we can call ceramic. For modern tile specifications, it is more a case of reverse-naming, whereby manufacturers take tiles that have certain qualities and then assign the ceramic or porcelain titles to them.

The difference between porcelain and ceramic tiles is in their genetic makeup. Ceramic tiles are made using natural red, brown or white clay that is baked at high temperatures to reduce water content, and then the patterned glaze is applied.

Porcelain tiles are produced in largely the same way, except using only white clay. Finely-ground sand and feldspar are also added to the clay mixture and fired at higher temperatures than ceramic tiles. The result is a harder, much denser tile, which is less porous. It's this permeability of the tile which ultimately dictates whether it's classed as ceramic or porcelain.
